Also on the night was the added bonus of local girls “The Poppies” who entertained the audience in the foyer as they arrived … and again during the break…

It was a great night…nice to be involved.

When I sat down all those years ago and wrote my song ”How to Say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch”…for my pal Paul Damian little did I know where the path would lead.It has had a varied journey from the Royal Family to a play on Radio 1…well now it’s all happening…

…in…KAZAKHSTAN  !!!

I was delighted to receive an Email from Jonathan Richards who is a musical director informing me that the song was to be performed at the new Astana Opera House in Kazakstan on St.David’s day…as there is a strong Welsh ex-pat contingent there…the day will also include a rugby match played on the frozen lake…which doesn’t sound like a good idea to me…but these Welshmen are tough guys.

Got a call from Ben Jones who works on “The One Show” and asked if he could use a bit of my song “The Ballad of Una Stubbs” on the show as she was the guest….I thought about it for half a second and naturally said he could…they used a piece of the chorus as she was introduced….she is now 77 and still looks great…a national treasure…check out the song on YouTube…as the song says “I’m in love with Una Stubbs…”…aren’t we all?

I’ve recently been contacted by an American TV company who wish to use my song about Llanfair P.G. in Anglesey….the company cover “curious ” places and also want to use the Youtube video I produced for it…the company is called curioustravelertv.com    ….   all good stuff….the Youtube vid has had plenty of hits….seems a lot of folk want to learn “How To Say Lanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch” for some reason…if you fancy a lesson check it out.

Krankies panto

Here’s my Christmas card from my pals The Krankies who are in Panto in the SECC Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow…they are appearing in “Cinderella” with John Barrowman…I write songs and parodies for them each year…this time it was a parody of Miley Cirus’s “wrecking ball” where Jannette causes a sensation swinging in on a big metal ball….as always the panto has received rave reviews…nice to have played a small part in it all…..fandabidosi !!

ADRIAN ALBUM

I knew this would come back to haunt me…I wrote and recorded 22 songs back in the 80′s for my mate Adrian Street who was then a world class wrestler….he would enter the ring to some of them…others got MTV play in the States and some of them were used in the film “Grunt-The Wrestling Movie”…he was a total one-off.He now lives in the States and I have remained in touch with him over the years and we have recently decided to realease a collection of the classic songs on an album CD….it is a nice collectors item for fans of the golden days of wrestling.

It is available from the CD section of this site.

I’ve recently composed a comedy version of Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” for the Krankies…which they intend to perform at their Christmas panto with John Barrowman in Blackpool….Cinderella with Janette swing in on a big metal ball….the mind boggles …stand well clear !!

Monday 13th October 2014

I have just received the very sad news regarding Geoff Nugent who has sadly passed away.Geoff was one of the leading lights in the 60′s Merseybeat boom with his band “The Undertakers” and has continued performing ever since being a great supporter of local rock and roll charities including Mersey Cats,Cheshire Cats, and the monthly sessions at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton …Geoff was not only a great singer and performer he was a kind and considerate person who would do anything for you…he will be sadly missed by his band and friends and family…there will be a gap in the local music scene from now on.

On a personal note I have known him from back in the day and shared many gigs with him and always had a laugh when we met up I loved the guy and it has been my pleasure and a privilege to have been his friend.

The Cheshirecats are a rock and roll fundraising organisation where local musicians  meet up each week and jam with each other…all money raised from the great supporters goes to charities for sick kiddies…we recently heard of an 18 month old little girl called Addi Buckle who was born with cystic fibrosis…her parents,Andy and Emma, have been raising money to obtain an item called “The Vest” which will help young Addi to breathe unassisted…this costs £7000 and to date Andy and Emma have managed to raise £6200…so it was with pleasure we were able to give them a cheque for the remaining £800….I went round to their house with two of our representatives and met the family….Addi was an absolute delight…and we made her an instant honorary member of the Cheshirecats…we took some pictures of our new star and here they are….

 Cheshire Cats weekly jam session…..www.thecheshirecats.co.uk

The Wednesday night rock and roll jam sessions at Wallasey British Legion in Wirral are still raising money for sick children…our website has just been updated and is worth a look…check it out     www.thecheshirecats.co.uk    congratulations to all involved…above are the regular bands….

…last Wednesday (10th April) we were joined by guest band “Tempest” who gave us a great selection of Eagles and 60′s classics…great stuff cheers lads…you’re welcome any time.

Had a great afternoon at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton Wirral last Sunday (17th March)….did a solo spot which gave me a chance to run through an acoustic set of the songs I’ll be doing with James Burton this July…and caught up with some of my rocker mates…it was part of the regular “Merseybeat Story” which Doug Darroch (Fort Curator) organises….after my spot I interviewed drummer Arty Davies whose story included him representing Great Britain in disabled basketball…a great character followed by Dave Williams (The Jaywalkers) interviewing Faron (Faron’s Flamingos)…they broke the mould when they made him…The Merseybeat Story has a “Hall of Fame” and from time to time inducts various contributors to the sixties music….and this time…much (very much) to my surprise it was ME !!!!…you could have knocked me over with a feather…and for once in my life I was stuck for words…inductee no.27……it may only be a local thing but as far as I’m concerned it’s better than an Academy Award and I am well chuffed…made my day…thanks so much to all concerned…here are some pictures from the afternoon taken by my good mate John “teenager in love” Bailey.

Right… Dave Williams sneaking up on me with my award…                   Left…….. Faron…born to rock !!!     Right….. The talented Mike White.. MD for the up and coming JamesBurton concert…a hard worker and quality musician…I remember him being the same in school…     Left…. Cliff Roberts(centre) and his brother Steve…Cliffy has never looked any different since he left school…but wont say what tablets he’s on !!!…great guys. Right…Joe Flannery and 60′s chart man David Garrick

My new U.S.A. pal Joe Conroy, who is the ultimate doowop expert, has just been to Germany to see some of the doowop groups over there…this music is popular in Germany and Joe promotes these guys on his internet station www.doowopcafe.net (where he is known as DJ Brad)…and if,like me,you enjoy this brand of music you have to check out the station…and he also has a youtube channel under the name of doowopjoe….he makes sure we keep woppin’…below are some pictures he sent me from Germany…(left) Joe with The Crystalairs…(right) Joe with The Earth Angels (from Barcelona)…check out Joe on the namedropping section on this site.

James Burton is back in the country in July and I’m delighted to say I’ll be performing a Ricky Nelson set with him on the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton….the show is part of the 40th anniversary of his “Aloha from Hawaii” concert and takes place on 19th,20th and 21st of July…many top names will be performing over the weekend including Suzi Quatro,Paul Young,Charlie Landsborough,Liverpool Express, and a host of top local musos….not to be missed…

I have just received two CDs form my new pal in North Carolina…Joe Conroy…he is DJ Brad on the Doowop Cafe internet show…they contain his two hour show featuring my song “Doowop Days” where he plays recordings of the groups mentioned in the song…I met Joe over the net and he asked me if I could write a song featuring past and present doowop groups…I asked him to send me a list and off I went….after many re-mixes Joe (the ultimate perfectionist) was happy and on to Youtube it went….I was blown away by the programme and my name has never sounded so good as when Joe says it with his American accent…a privilege to be featured and to have such a good buddy….Joe (DJ Brad) can be found on “doowopcafe.com”…and on his Youtube channel under “doowopjoe”…the song is also on my Youtube channel and also on iTunes…..go on to Youtube and type in “Doowop Days Don Woods” and both channels should come up…check it out…I’m now a qualified doowopper….KEEP WOPPIN’

It was a pleasure and a privilege to be on the guest list at the book launch of my dear friend Angie McCartney…the event took place at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool and her booksigning was followed by a fabulous show of Beatles music…featuring four Beatle tribute bands…The Backwards (from the Slovak Republic)..The Tetrads (from Tokyo)…The Pangea (from the Czech Republic)…and local boys The Fab Beatles. The music was perfect and faultless…and followed the story of the Fab Four through the years from “Love Me Do” to “Sergeant Pepper”….pure nostalgia and totally authentic. The Japanese band couldn’t speak English but instantly turned into scousers when they sang…you had to love ‘em!!…it was a full house and was a fitting tribute to a great lady who I had the chance to catch up with in between her endless booksigning…and also daughter Ruth who is still as lovely as ever….as I haven’t seen them both for thirty odd years it was nice that they instantly recognised me…so I can’t have changed…can I?…er…O.K…..Angie’s book is called “My Long and Winding Road” and tells the story of her fascinating life with it’s many ups and downs….and at 83 I would guess she’s only reached the halfway point…check out her website…great stuff…www.mccartneysteas.com

Angie signing her book…and Ruth and me 30 years on….

Happy and prosperous 2013 to all my viewers out there and thanks for all the nice comments they are really appreciated.

Albert Lee

Albert Lee and Don WoodsAlbert Lee is one of the top guitarists in the world. He is greatly respected by musicians everywhere Albert Lee Don Woods and James burtonand is known for backing The Everly Brothers on their tours and his session work for Jerry Lee Lewis and the hits of Shakin’ Stevens and many others.I had the pleasure of appearing on the show he did at Fort Perch Rock in July 2012 with James Burton and to meet one of my idols is always a nice moment especially when they turn out to be really great guys.He told me he now lives in America and still tours with the Everlys…below is a shot of me rehearsing with Albert and James…tasty backing or what.

Dick Evans

Dick EvansWhilst working on a DVD of Anglesey I was taken by a friend to the cottage of Dick Evans. At the time I didn’t realise he was the most decorated lifeboat man in history…receiving the lifeboat equivalent of the George Cross. He was a delightful chap, made us a cup of tea and showed me the book he received after his appearance on “This Is Your Life” many years before. He pointed out that the book wasn’t actually his “life” but a series of photographs from the TV show…which was something not many people know. After another cup of tea and a cake I shook his hand and left.Sadly he passed away a short time later.I was walking in Moelfre (on Anglesey) many years later and was greeted by a huge statue of the great man….who had made me a cup of tea!!…The statue is facing out to the sea where he saved so many lives and is a fitting tribute to an extremely brave man I have been privileged to meet…..I bought his book detailing his adventures on the rough seas which reads like a James Bond novel…wonderful.

Chas McDevitt

Chas Mc Devitt and Don WoodsSkiffle in the 50’s was responsible for the beginning of the 60’s groups. One of the first great skifflers was Chas McDevitt who shot to fame with the classic “Freight Train” sung by Nancy Whiskey. So to have the opportunity of meeting this legend was one I readily took.I wrote a song for a dear friend of mine (the late John Lomax who was also a 50’s skiffler) entitled “The Story of Skiffle”…a song which got us a gig in Finland at the suggestion of Chas (who heard the song).I reminded him of this and he actually remembered.I gave him a copy of the song as a small tribute to him and he gave me a copy of his CD…a really quality gent to whom us rockers should be eternally grateful. The picture was taken at Fort Perch Rock.
