…Jan 17th 2016…it was my pleasure to attend a function at Fort Perch Rock New Brighton in memory of my dear mate Harry Prytherch….it was well attended by lots of Harry’s friends and there were nice performances from Cliff Roberts and Mark Poutney…plus a great set from The Jaywalkers and Mike White’s band “Don’t Walk”…..I got up with Mike and the boys and did a few Ricky Nelson songs which we all did together back in the summer….great to see Mike on guitar…Dave West on drums…Mal Price on bass and Mick Moon on keys…..the band finished off the afternoon with a fabulous set…as good as it gets….it was a great tribute to a great Merseybeat guy….

…23rd November I decided to call in on my old pal Monty Lister who I worked with on Radio Merseyside….on the way I collected my good friend Cliff Crozier….
…Cliff is probably the most interesting bloke I have ever met…as an ex headmaster he can talk on virtually any subject….
…this may not seem like anything special…except what is a bit mind blowing is he has just received a telegram from the Queen….
…because Cliff is 100 !!!…an absolute privilege to know and definitely my hero…an inspiration to us all.
11th September….got an Email from 41 wmgt which is a TV news channel broadcasting from Georgia in the U.S.A….they had seen Liam Dutton mention Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch with a faultless pronunciation on his Channel 4 weather forecast…and they asked if they could use my song and YouTube clip for a section of their programme….of course I said yes…and they sent me the result which was brilliant….here’s some stills of the programme…
…here’s Liam doing his now famous weather forecast
…here’s part of the YouTube clip used in the programme…”courtesy of donwoodswirral”….get me!!
…and here’s the presenters plugging my website…this has taken the number of hits on my YouTube clip to well over half a million!!!…thank you so much guys….it’s really appreciated.
…if you want to learn to say it check out my clip …find YouTube and type in “How To Say Llanfairpwll Don Woods” guaranteed to teach you that word!!!…not forgetting my dear pal Paul Damian who sings the song.
I was so sad to hear that my good friend and fellow musician Harry Prytherch had passed away……Harry was the most gentle and loveable guy and will be much missed by all who knew him…my love and deepest sympathies go out to his lovely wife Doris
Here’s me and my pal at Fort Perch Rock where Harry was a regular with his Merseybeat get togethers.
…and here he is as we will always remember him…he will never be forgotten.
July 3rd and 4th….the weekend of the James Burton Concert at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton had arrived…
…I was rehearsed and boy was I ready to ROCK with my all time hero….
…but first it was time to catch up with a few of my buddies…Radio Merseyside’s Frankie Connor…the guy who is impossible to dislike…he was going to compere the show…and I was delighted to meet up with The Passionettes…the best backing group in the world…having just come off tour in Australia backing Suzie Quatro…
….On the Friday night it was my pleasure to interview James….
…he told his fascinating story from his days with Ricky Nelson to Elvis Presley and a host of other major stars…including Roy Orbison,Jerry Lee Lewis,Emmy Lou Harris,John Denver etc…even Frank Sinatra…the list was endless and the audience were enthralled…
….the interview finished with a big Burton Hug….who could ask for more….he then got himself ready to do his Elvis/Emmy Lou set with the band….
…Saturday it was time for my set of 14 Ricky Nelson classics…backed by Mike White on guitar,Dave West on drums,Mal Price on Bass,Pete Lornie on percussion,my old mate Mick Moon on keys and the guy who was on all the records Mr.Burton….
…we launched into Stood Up,Poor Little Fool and all those great songs from back in the day including Fools Rush In,Travellin’ Man etc…
…and of course Hello Mary Lou….all with those great JB guitar solos
…what a privilege to play alongside a rock and roll icon…I have worked with James on five occasions but the buzz is always the same…he is a delightful, warm and sincere guy…and what a talent.
…Yep….”Play It James”….you ARE the man !!!

Here’s me and Phil with some of the staff…
May 20th….just had a rehearsal for the forthcoming James Burton Concert in July….
Great to meet up with my old mates from previous JB gigs.
Mike White on guitar….Dave West on drums…Pete Lornie on congas…Mal Price on bass…and me old mate Mick Davenport on keyboards….and it don’t get any better than this….
I was asked to compare a show on The Floral Pavilion on 1st March…it featured big band music performed by The Royal Air Force Swing Wing…it was a very nice evening with high quality music played to a sell out crowd…all proceeds went to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal….The British Legion was founded in 1921 in BIRKENHEAD….didn’t know that.
Also on the night was the added bonus of local girls “The Poppies” who entertained the audience in the foyer as they arrived … and again during the break…
I caught up with them in the break….every job has it’s perks!!
It was a great night…nice to be involved.
When I sat down all those years ago and wrote my song ”How to Say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch”…for my pal Paul Damian little did I know where the path would lead.It has had a varied journey from the Royal Family to a play on Radio 1…well now it’s all happening…
I was delighted to receive an Email from Jonathan Richards who is a musical director informing me that the song was to be performed at the new Astana Opera House in Kazakstan on St.David’s day…as there is a strong Welsh ex-pat contingent there…the day will also include a rugby match played on the frozen lake…which doesn’t sound like a good idea to me…but these Welshmen are tough guys.
Here’s Astana Kazakstan….and here’s the opera house.
How cool is all this.
Check out the song on YouTube
….and here is the performance…Jonathan is on the left.
I must say I feel very honoured…thank you so much.
Got a call from Ben Jones who works on “The One Show” and asked if he could use a bit of my song “The Ballad of Una Stubbs” on the show as she was the guest….I thought about it for half a second and naturally said he could…they used a piece of the chorus as she was introduced….she is now 77 and still looks great…a national treasure…check out the song on YouTube…as the song says “I’m in love with Una Stubbs…”…aren’t we all?
I’ve recently been contacted by an American TV company who wish to use my song about Llanfair P.G. in Anglesey….the company cover “curious ” places and also want to use the Youtube video I produced for it…the company is called curioustravelertv.com …. all good stuff….the Youtube vid has had plenty of hits….seems a lot of folk want to learn “How To Say Lanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch” for some reason…if you fancy a lesson check it out.
Here’s my Christmas card from my pals The Krankies who are in Panto in the SECC Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow…they are appearing in “Cinderella” with John Barrowman…I write songs and parodies for them each year…this time it was a parody of Miley Cirus’s “wrecking ball” where Jannette causes a sensation swinging in on a big metal ball….as always the panto has received rave reviews…nice to have played a small part in it all…..fandabidosi !!
I knew this would come back to haunt me…I wrote and recorded 22 songs back in the 80′s for my mate Adrian Street who was then a world class wrestler….he would enter the ring to some of them…others got MTV play in the States and some of them were used in the film “Grunt-The Wrestling Movie”…he was a total one-off.He now lives in the States and I have remained in touch with him over the years and we have recently decided to realease a collection of the classic songs on an album CD….it is a nice collectors item for fans of the golden days of wrestling.
It is available from the CD section of this site.
I’ve recently composed a comedy version of Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” for the Krankies…which they intend to perform at their Christmas panto with John Barrowman in Blackpool….Cinderella with Janette swing in on a big metal ball….the mind boggles …stand well clear !!
Monday 13th October 2014
I have just received the very sad news regarding Geoff Nugent who has sadly passed away.Geoff was one of the leading lights in the 60′s Merseybeat boom with his band “The Undertakers” and has continued performing ever since being a great supporter of local rock and roll charities including Mersey Cats,Cheshire Cats, and the monthly sessions at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton …Geoff was not only a great singer and performer he was a kind and considerate person who would do anything for you…he will be sadly missed by his band and friends and family…there will be a gap in the local music scene from now on.
On a personal note I have known him from back in the day and shared many gigs with him and always had a laugh when we met up I loved the guy and it has been my pleasure and a privilege to have been his friend.
I have just completed my latest album which looks back at the golden years of rock and roll….with those long summers, pony tails, bobby socks and vinyl records…with tributes to the stars who helped us through the heartbreak of those schoolday romances which never seemed to last…if you were fortunate enough to have been there this album will take you right back…if you weren’t there – this is what you missed…with 10 original tracks it is available from the CD section of this website.
There’s a little 5 year old lad called Troy Lockyer who needs medical help which is only available in America…his parents are struggling to raise £15000 to do this…The Cheshire Cats have donated £1000 to the cause…the kiddie is a delight…visit the Cats website for details www.thecheshirecats.co.uk ……let’s get the lad sorted.
I have recently completed a 45 minute DVD entitled “Wallasey Past & Present” which covers the history of the town over the last hundred years…it took 9 months to complete … it was a labour of love and is dedicated to those who know the area and my fellow Wallaseans wherever they may be…details can be found in the DVD section ….

The 2013 Cheshire Cats Xmas bash went great as always…
Well done everyone … we raised a lot of money for children’s charities this year…thanks to the bands and supporters…here’s to a rockin’ 2014
December 15th I went along to Harry Prytherch’s Christmas bash at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton Wirral…as always it was a great afternoon featuring “The Undertakers”…”The Copycats”…”The Smokey Joe Band”…and more….I got a chance to catch up with a few of my muso mates…Harry (people will talk you know)…Brian Saxophone Jones…and Gaz Gaskell …sax player and guitarist extraordinaire…our schooldays seem a long time ago….
The Cheshirecats are a rock and roll fundraising organisation where local musicians meet up each week and jam with each other…all money raised from the great supporters goes to charities for sick kiddies…we recently heard of an 18 month old little girl called Addi Buckle who was born with cystic fibrosis…her parents,Andy and Emma, have been raising money to obtain an item called “The Vest” which will help young Addi to breathe unassisted…this costs £7000 and to date Andy and Emma have managed to raise £6200…so it was with pleasure we were able to give them a cheque for the remaining £800….I went round to their house with two of our representatives and met the family….Addi was an absolute delight…and we made her an instant honorary member of the Cheshirecats…we took some pictures of our new star and here they are….
Phil Moy,Tony Cavanagh and myself presenting the cheque to Andy and Emma on behalf of The Cheshirecats…as Addi gives us a tune
Our new star….
This is what makes it all worth while…well done everyone at the Wednesday night bashes…it’s only rock and roll…and we love it!!
Check out what we do on the ‘Cats website …click on this …
Popped in to Fort Perch Rock and enjoyed an informal gig by Count John McCormick who was The Spinners double bass player…they told the story of skiffle and performed songs from the time…great stuff….on guitar was an old pal of mine who I haven’t seen for thirty odd years…songwriter Brian Hall who penned the 70′s hit “Amanda” for Stuart Gillies….also another mate Carl Chase….the man who gets killed in every movie he features in (The Mummy…Cut-throat Island…etc…etc)….it’s no surprise he always plays the baddie…….
Count John McCormick (on the left)
Brian Hall…hasn’t changed in 30 years…well not much.
Carl Chase…still alive and kicking despite his many violent come-upances in his films…..
A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon
The Wednesday night Cheshire Cats jam sessions are still rockin’ the joint…check us out…. www.thecheshirecats.co.uk
The James Burton Concert 20th July 2013
20th July was the date of the James Burton Concert at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton Wirral….I was involved in celebrating James’s connection with Ricky Nelson and sang a selection of Ricky’s hits…finishing with the Roy Orbison classic “Pretty Woman” who James has also backed….
This was the band during earlier rehearsals…left to right…the hard working “quiet man” Mike White who sorts out the music for everyone and plays great guitar alongside James…drummer Dave West…yours truly…bassman Joel Goldberg…Mick Moon keyboards…Pete Lorney percussion…
Not forgetting Louise Hartley and Dionne Collins…”The Passionettes”…my favourite backing group…although they can be a bit scary at times…ya gotta love these gals
We all spent the afternoon at the soundcheck and met up with James and ran through the set….here’s soundman Simon Grainger…best in the business.
We meet again…this is the fourth concert I have had the pleasure of doing with my personal guitar hero…my idol since 1958
The soundcheck went well and after a few alterations here and there we were ready to rock…James is a great pro to work with and his solos still blow us all away…
On the bill was the great Pete Wylie from the 80′s chart band “The Mighty Wah”….great songwriter and quality guy
Also Brian “Nasher” Nash…guitarist with the sensational “Frankie Goes To Hollywood” who enjoyed several number one hits
I also had a chance to catch up with my old mate Billy Butler from Radio Merseyside who compered the show…always guaranteed a laugh when Billy’ around
Rounding off a great night was Charlie Landsborough who, although we live quite close to each other,I’ve never really had a chance to get to know…Charlie’s popularity stretches as far as Australia…and he has to be one of the nicest fellas in the world…we possibly played football against each other in the early sixties but neither of us can remember.
It was a great night and a privilege to be a part of…..
I discussed the show with Vince Tracy on his weekly podcast…where we solve the problems of the world every Saturday morning…and put them to rights…if you want to check it out click http://vincetracy.com/donwoods2010.html
Just had a rehearsal at Fort Perch Rock for the forthcoming James Burton Concert on 19th,20th and 21st July….it is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the “Aloha From Hawaii” concert where James backed Elvis…it is over the three nights and features a host of great musicians including Charlie Landsborough,Suzi Quatro,Paul Young,Pete Wylie,Liverpool Express and many more….I’ll be performing a Ricky Nelson set with James (who was Ricky’s guitarist in the fifties and early sixties)…great to catch up with the boys in the band,Nick Crouch,Geoff Nugent,Sue Hedges and of course Louise and Dionne the wonderful Passionettes….also nice to meet legendary singer songwriter Pete Wylie…a great guy…we all had a good laugh as usual…for details of the show visit www.fortperchrock.org or www.floralpavilion.com ……..be there or…well you know the rest.

The sky’s the limit !!
We have discovered a new STAR at our Cheshire Cats weekly jam session…she is our lovely barmaid Michelle Derbyshire who has just done a parachute jump for charity…bravely earning the £1000 sponsorship from the organisation…this and the other money our little hero has raised will go to the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital…here she is …about to receive the cheque from me and Phil Moy…we are all proud of you Michelle….the Cheshire Cats are a fundraising organisation for sick kids…check us out on www.thecheshirecats.co.uk
The afternoon of Sunday 19th May featured a 60′s memorabilia auction at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton…hosted by my good mate Harry Prytherch (ex Remo Four drummer)….as usual Harry was on top form (handling the heckles very well) ably assisted by his lovely wife Doris,Dave Williams and Dave the Rave….it was a full house including a lot of local musicians …the auction raised a lot of money for Cancer Research….Cliffy Roberts and Carl Chase did a few short spots and I was asked to sing a song utilising a “one off” guitar which was hand made in he States (Harry sprung that one on me)…it was all great fun with Dave the Rave as a human mike stand…the guitar fetched £100 and most of the other items including old Merseybeat magazines and Beatles and Buddy Holly souvenirs and of course Elvis gear all sold well….Radio Merseyside’s Billy Butler was called over to auction some of the items which he did in his own hilarious way…the whole afternoon was a huge success with lots of laughs…well done Harry…you ARE the man !!!
Full House for the auction…..Cliffy gives us a song with human mikestand…and Billy Butler finds possible new career as an auctioneer
Recently had a run through of the Ricky Nelson set I’ll be doing with James Burton in July…met the band and they were brilliant…two guys I didn’t know…Joel on bass and Dave on drums…faultless…and great to play again with Mick Davenport on keys and my mate Mike White on guitar…and also at the rehearsal doing their part of the show was Nick Crouch of The Mojos and Geoff Nugent of The Undertakers…had a good laugh…we are now ready to rock.

…last Wednesday (10th April) we were joined by guest band “Tempest” who gave us a great selection of Eagles and 60′s classics…great stuff cheers lads…you’re welcome any time.
Had a great afternoon at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton Wirral last Sunday (17th March)….did a solo spot which gave me a chance to run through an acoustic set of the songs I’ll be doing with James Burton this July…and caught up with some of my rocker mates…it was part of the regular “Merseybeat Story” which Doug Darroch (Fort Curator) organises….after my spot I interviewed drummer Arty Davies whose story included him representing Great Britain in disabled basketball…a great character followed by Dave Williams (The Jaywalkers) interviewing Faron (Faron’s Flamingos)…they broke the mould when they made him…The Merseybeat Story has a “Hall of Fame” and from time to time inducts various contributors to the sixties music….and this time…much (very much) to my surprise it was ME !!!!…you could have knocked me over with a feather…and for once in my life I was stuck for words…inductee no.27……it may only be a local thing but as far as I’m concerned it’s better than an Academy Award and I am well chuffed…made my day…thanks so much to all concerned…here are some pictures from the afternoon taken by my good mate John “teenager in love” Bailey.
Right… Dave Williams sneaking up on me with my award… Left…….. Faron…born to rock !!! Right….. The talented Mike White.. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be on the guest list at the book launch of my dear friend Angie McCartney…the event took place at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool and her booksigning was followed by a fabulous show of Beatles music…featuring four Beatle tribute bands…The Backwards (from the Slovak Republic)..The Tetrads (from Tokyo)…The Pangea (from the Czech Republic)…and local boys The Fab Beatles. The music was perfect and faultless…and followed the story of the Fab Four through the years from “Love Me Do” to “Sergeant Pepper”….pure nostalgia and totally authentic. The Japanese band couldn’t speak English but instantly turned into scousers when they sang…you had to love ‘em!!…it was a full house and was a fitting tribute to a great lady who I had the chance to catch up with in between her endless booksigning…and also daughter Ruth who is still as lovely as ever….as I haven’t seen them both for thirty odd years it was nice that they instantly recognised me…so I can’t have changed…can I?…er…O.K…..Angie’s book is called “My Long and Winding Road” and tells the story of her fascinating life with it’s many ups and downs….and at 83 I would guess she’s only reached the halfway point…check out her website…great stuff…www.mccartneysteas.com
Angie signing her book…and Ruth and me 30 years on….
